That space left because no cars are currently parked along the side of the road and the bus is about 6 feet away from the curb is not a lane. It's a bus stop. Someone might expect to be able to step off the bus without almost getting hit by a car. Really. Ask anyone.

Glad to hear you're ok. The "E" line is similar once you get beyond brigham circle, but at least when I have to use it, there are alwaya parked cars by South Hungiton Ave that passively prevent drivers from doing this sort of thing. Even the dumbest of drivers can see there's no room to squeeze between the trolley and the parked cars.
