I like alternating simplicity and complexity. The fiddly bits of the TARDIS and the Dalek are offset by projects like this and the ducky sets and all.

I agree with that principle. I like to have a "zen" knitting project going, that I can work on without thought, and a more complex one when I want to feel challenged.

Yup. I take the less-fiddly ones on the T, because I (a) don't want to get caught up in a complex pattern and miss my stop or (b) don't want to have to keep checking pattern notes while I'm on the train. Right now, for example, my traveling knitting project is a simple rolled-brim hat (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/patterns/hatrollbrim.htm).
