gnomi: (alternate_kitty)

So, as [personal profile] mabfan said, he and I are traveling to New York this weekend. And, for me, travel comes with the requisite Packing Angst. What do I take? How much of what do I need? And, at this time of year, how many different possible weather patterns should I prepare for? We're trying to pack light, so that we don't have to schlep too much to the thing on Sunday (since we're leaving from there directly to the train).

My current thought is as follows:

-- Backpack containing books for reading over the weekend and manuscripts to work on during the actual travel

-- Laptop case containing, well, my laptop (and maybe a couple of DVDs for when I get too eye-fried to work on manuscripts anymore)

-- Duffle bag for clothing and travel needs (meds, hairbrush, toothbrush, etc.). Clothing is: two shul-worthy outfits, PJs, smalls, shul-worthy shoes (reminds self that not every shul is like our shul, where at least 1/2 the women wear sneakers to shul).

My thinking is this: One outfit for Friday night and Sunday's event, one outfit for Shabbat day, mufti for traveling on Friday and for motzai Shabbat (Saturday night).

Am I forgetting anything? I'll run the Perpetual Packing Protocol this evening so that I don't forget, for instance, to water the plants. I'll set my Out of Office before I leave this afternoon. And that, I think, is that. But I'm stressing, regardless.

::sigh::

That's on the PPP, for just this reason. :-)

It'll get packed. Thanks for the reminder.

Mufti: I could not figure out why you were taking an expert on Islamic religious law until I looked that up. O, THE CONFUSION.

As for the rest of the packing, I can't say, because I pack weird. :)

I *should* take an expert on Islamic religious law!

::nods head sagely::

::tries to figure out where he'd fit in my luggage::

::abandons this idea::

I picked up "mufti" as a term for casual clothes from my dad, who uses it regularly.

*laughs!* I get it now -- military term for civilian clothing, possibly deriving from the original term. My brain does not take sharp rights like that too well. SCREEEEECH. :)

Thank you for this: I only knew the second definition and am tickled to find another use of Mufti.

I think we need to chip in and get Nomi larger bags.

I have a duffel bag in which one *could* put a six-foot-tall person.

We once, while I was in Israel, put one of the smaller guys from my program in it (at his instigation).

That's not the one I'm taking to New York, however.

My dad was never in the military, but he worked with Air Force officers for many, many years. He probably picked it up from them, or, if he picked it up when he was younger, from his cousin who was in the military at some point.

I should ask him...

I knew the term from reading... something... by Heinlein maybe, or any other writer with military background.

Do you have some peanut butter?

I want you to be prepared in case you are attacked by feral celery!

In all seriousness, do you need traveling food in case you get hungry en route? Water bottle, etc?

Eeek! Feral celery in the wilds of New York City!

We'll probably pack a couple of travel snacks, but we're going to have lunch with a friend when we get to Manhattan, and then the fine folks with whom we're staying will feed us dinner and all. Water bottle's a good idea, though.

Do you really need the laptop? It's only a weekend, you can't use it one of the days anyway...

Between [personal profile] mabfan and me we have to bring at least one, since he has writing deadlines coming up and we want something to watch the DVDs on. I could leave mine behind, theoretically, but then I'd have to transfer stuff that is in my laptop case to some other manner of luggage (such as my backpack). Hmmm... will ponder further.

Maybe we should just take my laptop, then, since I know I need to write on a computer, and you could edit on paper.

I too am going to NY this weekend, and I am more or less going through the same thing (http://jamietr.livejournal.com/667134.html) in terms of packing and stuff to get done before I leave. I am leaving the office in 2 minutes and plan on spending the rest of the evening preparing for my trip tomorrow.

Safe travels!
