I'm looking to get a microphone that is compatible with my Mac. I'm thinking of this one, of which I've heard good things, but I don't want to settle for it just because it's inexpensive. Does anyone know anything about the Logitech mic? Or can anyone recommend a different one that's good and, say, $100 or under?

Overall I can recommend Logitech since my best stage management headset was made by them that that thing was a workhorse. Most of the sound products produced by them that I have used have been good.

My one caveat is are you sure that it is mac compatible?

Assuming it's the same one Logitech lists here, it is.

It is, in fact, that selfsame one.

It is Mac compatible. In fact, I first learned about it by searching the Apple store.

What's it going to be used for? If you think you may want to use Skype or something similar someday, it might be worth a little more money going with a decent USB headset with a built-in mic.

Also, whatever you decide to go with, if Best Buy sells it, this coupon might bring the price down a little more.

Mostly for spoken word recordings, though [personal profile] mabfan was saying something about Skype as well.

And coupons are always good in my book; thanks!

Depends on your needs. What are you looking to do with the mic? Record spoken word? Sung? Instrumentals? Interviews? Use Skype? I know people who have used that mic for skype fairly reliably. Using it with a laptop or a desktop (how portable do you want it)?

Currently, I'm using a Blue Snowball (http://www.bluemic.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Products&file=index&prod_id=18) which runs about $100 on the Apple Store, or audio retailers like Sweetwater or Musician's Friend. Sometimes it is on sale for about $70. It's USB, and has a switchable setting for cardioid (directional), cardioid with a -10db pad (reduced sensitivity so you can be louder without clipping), and omnidirectional (pick up sounds from every direction).

Again, without a better idea of your needs, I can't recommend something specific...

Using it mostly for spoken word. Occasional singing, probably, but not regularly.

ETA: answers to the rest of your questions. I'm on a laptop, using it with the laptop but not using it on the go very much, at least not at this juncture. Running OS 10.4

The Snowball is probably a good choice then. Or the Snowflake, a smaller, portable, unidirectional mic that looks to be about $60 in various places. I've heard decent things about the Samson C01U as well, but as a brand Samson equipment tends to only last 4 or 5 years, and Blue is a little more highly regarded.
