From an MBTA Alert:
Green E Line is being diverted due to automobile traffic on Huntington Avenue. Please utilize route#39 buses between Heath Street and Brigham Circle.

So their solution to automobile traffic is to tell people to take buses that travel *with the automobile traffic*?

I know that the E runs right down the middle of Huntington Ave and stops right in the middle of the street in places, but I'm not at all clear how offloading people onto buses helps the situation at all.

To be fair, a buss only takes up the space of two and a half cars but seats many more people than that number of cars would.

That is a good point.

Well, and how on earth is the automobile traffic affecting the T? Are they suddenly driving on the tracks?

The Green Line (and especially the E) runs right in the middle of the traffic in spots, thus making it highly susceptible to car-traffic-related interference.

When traffic gets really screwed up (as in the aftermath of a really bad accident, for example), buses do in fact do better than the street running portion of the E branch. This is because the light rail vehicles have absolutely no ability to steer around obstructions whereas the buses do.

Oh, good point. I hadn't thought about that. I was down in the Brigham Circle area recently (getting off the 66), and the E was *right there* as I got off the bus, almost right next to the bus.

Well, except for designated stops, a bus can go around stuff.
