-- We got a lot of snow between Friday and Sunday. It's pretty, but it's kind of treacherous to walk on.

-- I'm having a bout of StupidFoot. In other words, I'm having a recurrence of the random foot pain in my right foot (I last had StupidFoot in May). It makes the snow-covered streets/sidewalks that much more challenging.

-- I'm on vacation from now until I return to work on 5 January. Having time off from work-work, even though it's going to be filled with lots of stuff, is a very nice thing.

-- I spent part of this afternoon channelling Fawn Hall and shredding documents dating back to mid-1999.

-- Tonight, [personal profile] mabfan and I joined [profile] malkaesther and [personal profile] llennhoff at Ta'am China. The crowd included [profile] sorek, [profile] eireangus, [profile] madknits, [personal profile] chaiya, [personal profile] hakamadare, and four or five people whom I didn't know and who may or may not have online presences.

-- Last night was the first night of Channukah. This Saturday and Sunday are Rosh Chodesh, the beginning of the month of Tevet. What this means is that we have a Shabbat Rosh Chodesh Channukah, thus necessitating three different torah scrolls to be used on Saturday morning.

-- I can't do a rambly bits post without a mention of knitting, so I will note that I am making good progress on a couple of different projects I currently have on needles, and I am, for the first time in a long time, without an active pair of socks on needles (however, I have yarn for two more pairs of socks, so I'll be casting on new socks sooner rather than later).

ooh thanks for the lj names. I got [livejournal.com profile] madknits but didn't catch [livejournal.com profile] eireangus's full lj name. Also [livejournal.com profile] chaiya's husband's lj account is [livejournal.com profile] hakamadare (note the three "a"s :)

In any case, it was great seeing you, [livejournal.com profile] mabfan and everyone else!

It was good to see you, too.

And I note that's *four* "a"s -- I'd had three. :-)

Does the intersection of Channukah and Rosh Chodesh happen every year?

Channukah always has a Rosh Chodesh during it. However, it doesn't always fall on Shabbat.

don't forget Festivus, it coincides this year with Channukah.

True! It does! But that does not necessitate a *fourth* Torah. If it did, Kadimah might have a problem...

Aren't two scrolls typically used on Shabbat anyway, the second for maftir?

Date: 2008-12-24 02:12 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] gnomi.livejournal.com
There's typically only one scroll used, as the maftir is a repetition of the end of the last section of the reading. On Rosh Chodesh and other days where you have a special maftir, you use a second scroll. And since Shabbat Rosh Chodesh Chanukah essentially has two special maftirs, you need two extra scrolls.

I hear of more and more companies that are shutting down completely between Christmas and several days after the New Year. So much for the Jews going in to work on Yashka's birthday and bris. On the other hand, it sounds a bit like school vacation, which everyone needs. Enjoy your break.

My company is open, but I have extra vacation time (which does carry from year to year) and personal days (which don't carry), so I'm taking the time off.

I've heard of a number of companies that do close completely, some for monetary reasons and others from the realization that many people will be taking the time off anyway.

It was great to see you. At least 2 of the people that joined us don't have online presences.

I love seeing my name in other's journals.

May your foot pain go away and not return.

My foot is doing a lot better, thank you (there's some residual pain, but it's significantly less and I'm walking a lot better).

I agree about seeing one's name in other's journals. There's a little frisson of a thrill every time I see my handle mentioned. :-)

And it was wonderful to see you. I'm glad you arranged the get-together.
