(gotten from [personal profile] saxikath, whose post I didn't respond to 'cause I honestly have no memory of when we met. It was [personal profile] mabfan-related, so sometime 1991-1993 timeframe.)

"Add a comment to this journal telling me what you remember about first meeting me (online most certainly counts; if you have a choice between online and in person, I'll request the most amusing :-) I'll respond to each comment with my memories of you.

And, of course, if you like it, try it in your own journal."

Oh, you must be Becky's sister. :)

Must I? :-)

I honestly can't remember if we knew each other and then made the Becky connection, or if when we first met you pegged me as Becky's sister.

It's kind of like how, around Harvard St. at times, I have to introduce myself as daughter-of-Ima (or -Abba) to place myself contextually in the person's mind.

(and, believe it or not, that was 13 years ago...)

Honestly, I'm not sure. I almost never remember first meetings. I know that I knew Becky already, and I have a vague recollection that maybe I knew in advance that you'd be around, but it might have happened the other way.
Long time ago, more or less.

It was at Harold and Becky's engagement party, under the tent. You were talking about how a friend kashered her microwave so it could be used for the party.

I don't remember half of the people I met that day, honestly. I do remember, though, encountering you again at a convention not long after that (Boskone or Arisia 1991?).

And I'm glad you've gone from being, in my mind, a random friend of Becky and Harold's to being a friend of mine, as well.

I'm pretty sure it was at a party at Jen P-G's old apartment on Allston St... but it was long enough ago that I'm having a hard time placing the occasion for that particular party (their engagement?), or even whose apartment it was at the time (Anton and Miriam's)? There was present-opening going on, that's all I can remember.

I know we met through a mutual Brandeis-connected someone. Jen P-G's a likely suspect.

Unless we met at that regional shabbaton at Brandeis in the spring of 1994. It was muddy, and I was the chick on crutches.

That was probably the same party where I met you. Your memories (or lack thereof) matches mine.

And then shortly afterwards, I saw you at a Lunacon I was attending sans Nomi, and you looked familiar, and then I placed you. Or rather, you reminded me who you were.

Certainly that was the same party. :-) But the con couldn't have been that shortly thereafter, because I never went to a Lunacon (or even an Arisia for that matter) until 2000. The party was definitely earlier.

I'm not sure if I ever met you before your engagement party. I would think I must've, but I can't place any specific meeting before then.

I have a vague memory of some G&S opening at the Aggaziz (OK, so I totally misspelled that), but you could be right.

I think it was at one of the Buffycon parties. You were singing, and smiling.

But I don't know for sure. We have enough friends in common that we might have met several times before we actually got to talk.

I first remember you being part of my conscious "crowd of folk" as "that woman who's brave enough to chair the first Buffycon." And, yes, I was both singing and smiling at a number of Buffycon parties, so that's very likely (especially if there was one at Arisia 2002, as we'd done singing from "Once More with Feeling" at shabbat dinner, as well, and we were all in the Buffy-musical-singing mood).

Though you're right that it's also possible that we met through mutual friends. Fandom gets that way after a while, doesn't it? It's good, though.

If you were at Shabbat lunch in Harold and Becky's hotel room at the Worldcon mere days after Aaron was born, then we met there. But I'm really lousy with remembering faces and I have no physical memory of you, so maybe we haven't actually met in person. I'm not sure. Online, I followed a link from some forgotten source to your journal.

I was, indeed, at that shabbat dinner, but I don't remember most of the folk I met there (Worldcon's not the best place to meet people for the first time, in my experience, if I hope to remember them).

I think you found me here in LJ-land through [personal profile] arib, as I remember us both commenting on something he posted.

I think that our online meeting is the more amusing: you writing to me asking for [livejournal.com profile] eal's address so that you could send her mint chocolate chip ice cream. It wasn't the first time we talked, but you've forgiven me for that, thank goodness. :-D

Still haven't found a way to mail ice cream and keep it from melting...

And I'm thrilled to have gotten to know you in person as well as on-line.

Heh. One of these days, when you least expect it, I'll have figured out how to keep it from becoming mint-chocolate-chip soup, and ice cream will magically appear.

Whenever we tell the story of our first meeting together, we always contradict each other, so I won't bother setting down my definitive version here. You can share it if you like...

Oh, what the hey. BU Hillel, first Friday night dinner of the Fall 1991 term. I was a graduate student and you were an undergraduate. There was a lot of singing and SCA stuff...

Okay, we have three firsts. Two online -- one in person.

I don't think the first, first counts because it didn't take. Emailed feedback, you sent a polite response and that's that.

The second first, I responded to I don't remember which story, but I pointed out that you were having a continuity problem. Kind of your continuity slip was showing. And here we are.

The third first, or the first in person meeting. New York. The lobby, curiously on the eighth floor, of a hotel. At the moment I'd decided I should call you, I spotted someone looking as confused and bewildered as I was and there we were. It was cool. And we had a blast.

I honestly don't know that any of them were amusing, per se, as in a giggle fest for someone else.

True - we do. Hadn't thought of it that way, but you're right.

See, I think of the first first as being your response to my "help! Did I hallucinate this scene, or did it really show up on screen?" e-mail. And you assured me that I hadn't hallucinated it at all. Which was quite helpful, I tell you.

The second first, I responded to I don't remember which story, but I pointed out that you were having a continuity problem. Kind of your continuity slip was showing. And here we are.

And you were totally right (if I remember correctly, a character left home wearing one shirt and showed up in the next scene wearing something completely different). And the rest is history. :-)

Confused and bewildered is right. Weird hotel it was, with odd elevators. And I'd just told MAB that I was going to call you if I didn't spot you when, in fact, we spotted each other. Timing is everything, I guess.

I honestly don't know that any of them were amusing, per se, as in a giggle fest for someone else.

You and I (and [personal profile] mabfan) were amused, at least with the in-person one, and that's all that counts, right?

Well, you don't think I'd have actually put myself out there if I wasn't damned sure I was right, do you?

Good point. But when I first got your e-mail on the story, my reaction was, "could I have been that scatter-brained?" Turned out the answer was, in fact, "yes."

Feh!

Feh, I say. It logged me in and then refused to show me as me. Anyway, the above blather is from me. :-)

But you probably knew that.
