The candies ones didn't turn out so well, but we did a batch with olive oil, salt & pepper that were the tastiest.

Sweet potatoes should be served mashed with margarine and brown sugar.

The sweet potato dish we had (masquerading as yams) were baked, mashed, had some maple syrup added (dark amber, grade B). The were good, but I still prefer regular potatoes to either yams or sweet potatoes masquerading as each other.

I included velociraptor attacks because the friends I was with on TG day have four dogs, three of whom sat in my lap at some point or another during the day. These are not lap dogs, and included a bezenji, a pit bull-and-something mix, and a shepherd-and-something mix. The last one must weigh a good 60 pounds or more.
In. My. Lap. My legs will never be the same.

Our sweet potatoes (not yams, thank you for distinguishing) were roasted with olive oil and cinnamon.

I won swag from Boston Organics for my sweet potato pie recipe. :D

Wolf wanted to make plain baked sweet potatoes as well, but never got to it.

Also, I got both lots of sleep at the beginning of the weekend, and not enough at the end.

Holiday sweet potatoes in my family are mashed and involve rum, maple syrup, & maple-candied pecans. They're more of a dessert than a vegetable. The rest of the year they are either baked and served with butter (it they're slim and have thin skin) or peeled and cut into wedges, then seasoned with corn flour, smoked paprika, black pepper, raw sugar, and sea salt, then baked until crispy.

This weekend included a dear friend, delicious and thoroughly vegan butternut squash soup, thoroughly vegetarian mushroom and onion risotto, no yams or sweetpotatoes, and an excessive amount of traffic.

But when I do make yams/sweet potatoes, I do this thing with apples, carrots, butter, brown sugar and prunes. It's sort of like a meatless tsimmis.

Mashed sweet potatoes (http://onehotstove.blogspot.com/2007/11/mashed-sweet-potatoes.html). Our meal this year was vegan, plus the turkey/gravy/in-bird stuffing, which made for some slightly different recipes than usual.

roasted sweet potatoes as well. There was a threat of a raptor attack, but it turned out to be a false alarm. Thak goodness, as we were ill-prepared!

i don't know if we had yams or sweet potatoes, but they were mashed and baked in a casserole dish with pecans on top, and they were goooood. (and that's the most accurate i can get because i didn't bring them and don't know who did.)

one year my mom made candied yams with marshmallows on top and they caught fire in the oven. oops.

I made an apple-crusted sweet potato casserole (that was actually an apple-crusted yam casserole)--tasty, tasty goodness. Finished the last leftovers yesterday. Yum!

A recipe that I learned a few years back: sweet potatoes with sugar, cream, eggs, and butter, with a topping made of brown sugar, a little flour, butter, and crushed pecans.

We bake sweet potatoes, and then I cut some of them up and put them in the vegetarian pot pie, along with loads of other veggies, and cover it all with sage&thyme gravy and puff pastry. I leave the rest of them plain, for folks who like to cover them in butter and nutmeg and mash them on their plates.

This weekend included me sleeping in a bathtub with the bathroom window open to the brisk Adirondack weather, my cloak wrapped around me for warmth and using my teddy bear as a pillow, because it was the only room in the cabin that didn't smell of polyurethane and new paint. I figured "Velociraptor attacks" was a close enough equivalent. :)

I am confused by the apparent distinction that is being posited here between "sweet potato" and "yam." The tubers that people in the US eat for Thanksgiving are all sweet potatoes though they are often called yams. The true yam is a much larger and unrelated tuber that, although I have seen it in supermarkets, I think essentially nobody eats for Thanksgiving. Also, my mom made a sweet potato casserole this year, it was delicious.

Sweet potatoes are either mashed with maple syrup and orange juice or just plain roasted with salt/pepper/onion/garlic/whatever's at hand. I much prefer the former.

What you can buy in most markets -- yams and sweet potatoes are the same thing. The big orange things we get in the grocery stores here in the US are neither a Yam or a Sweet Potato.

That said, I can't stand sweetening them up any more than is natural for them. I steamed them this year and mashed them with goat cheese, salt, pepper and paprika.

Sweet potatoes simply need a bit of mashing to be perfect. Candying them is an abomination.

I answered for the dinner my family has, not the one I would make if I were in charge. I would much rather have sweet potatoes. In my family the yams (which they call "sweet potatoes", but they're not) are in casserole form; the specifics vary but it generally involves them being mashed, mixed with fat and sweet (e.g. margarine and brown sugar, or maple syrup), optionally supplemented with other stuff (this year it was apples, last year oatmeal), and baked.

Roasted root vegetables!

I avoid yams because they can cause more ovulation, and I'm trying to save my chances. So I'm a sweet potato girl.

Missed you this Thanksgiving!
