"...but I'm feeling much better now!"
Jul. 22nd, 2004 07:44 pmAround 3:00 PM this afternoon, on a whim, I called our home phone number. One ring, then dead silence. I hang up and repeat the process. Ring, then dead silence. And again. "Ah hah," thinks I. "This is a good sign." Why? Because that, in my experience, is what happens when they've turned off a phone line so that a guy doesn't get zzzzaaapppped by an incoming phone call while he's mucking with the line.
At around 4:40 (M is being pedantic; he wants me to say it was 4:37), MAB calls me. He has also, on a whim, called into our home line. And after four rings, our answering machine picked up. Thus, we have restored phone service. Yaaay! There is much rejoicing. We arrange to meet around 6 PM to go to the Butcherie.
There we are, waiting in line at the deli counter at the Butcherie to get stuff for shabbat lunch, when my cell phone rings. It's an unfamiliar number. When I answer it, the voice at the other end is a man who tells me he's Bud, from Verizon, and he knows that we have an appointment for tomorrow afternoon but, as it happens, he's in the neighborhood. Would I like him to come over within the next half hour and check the line (he, too, has determined that the service is back on)? Yes, I say. Of course I would. So I boogie on home from Butcherie (thankfully, 2.5 blocks) and wait for Bud and his truck.
He arrives, tells me that likely what happened was that a neighboring twisted pair fell on our twisted pair and shorted out both pairs. So when they fixed the neighboring twisted pair, ours came back, too. And he gave us his pager number - if our phone service goes out again within the week, we are to page him and he will come and fix it for us.
This was, honestly, the first good service we've ever had from Verizon (see this for a more typical example...and don't even get me started on the whole "yeah, I know it's fine up to the CO; we live a block from the CO and we don't have phone service, dammit" incident from 1996-1997).

John Astin quote!
Date: 2004-07-22 05:31 pm (UTC)That's a John Astin quote in your subject line, and it's one that I used to you on Tuesday! *happy dance* Whee!
Hey, do you want copies of my Night Court tapes? They're from A&E and not complete, but they're better than a slap to the head with a wet noodle. And his orchestra.
You can maybe tell that I'm punchy today. I'm fine though. :-D Also, I made my mother watch the first two episodes of Sports Night on DVD and she is so hooked. I knew that she would be. She loves sports and Robert Guillaime (spelling may be wrong, feel free to correct me if so). :-)
