gnomi: (dictionary_moo)
[personal profile] gnomi
Because [personal profile] ayoub made me think about it, and because I've always had a not-so-secret desire to be a lexicographer, I pose the following question:

If there were to be a dictionary of [personal profile] gnomi-isms, what words would it contain?

Off the top of my head, I can think of:

-- Splorp (that which inspired this line of thought)
-- Narf
-- Thingy
-- Obnox
-- Enpenguinate

Additional [personal profile] gnomi-isms:
-- Horfles (suggested by [personal profile] mabfan)
-- Procrastisurfing (suggested by [personal profile] tsuki_no_bara)
-- Snackquisition (suggested by [profile] beths_stanley)
-- Pornucopia (suggested by [profile] beths_stanley)

But then I get stuck. I know there are many words in my idiolect that are specifically [personal profile] gnomi-isms, but I have no idea what they are. So I bring it to you. What should go in the Dictionary of [personal profile] gnomi-isms?

How could you forget horfles?

Right! Horfles! I should add that one.

Horfles is Mushrooms Stroganoff (http://www.asknomi.com/mushrooms.htm) (I add soy meat to it to bump up the protein).

Thanks for posting this; it's a Linguist's Delight. I will admit, however, to hankering after a definition for "enpenguinate."

I'm glad you enjoyed it. :-)

To enpenguinate is to cause a penguin-related item to be added to my (growing) collection of penguin-related items. It started out as a multiple hyphenate (en-penguin-ate), but -- as often happens, I've noticed -- it lost its hyphens. An example sentence:

[profile] beckyfeld enpenguinated me this morning with a penguin welcome mat.

Thank you. That's a very satisfactory definition and example.

It reminds me of exsanguinate, a delightful-on-the-tongue but less felicitous verb.

Yup. That formed part of the inspiration for my definition. Funny that blood transfusions don't appear to be considered re-sanguination.

I'm a bad man.

Enpenguinate, en-PEN-gwin-ATE vt:

1. The introduction of a penguin into any given situation, in an effort to introduce levity to an otherwise uneventful or boring circumstance.
2. To shove a penguin up somebody's behind, ostensibly to make one or both parties feel better.

Kinda like impregnate, but, um, different.

enpenguinate, definitely. and i got "procrastisurfing" from you too.

Procrastisurfing (which I'm doing right now, in fact) is a prime example of how new [personal profile] gnomiisms get created. I frequently just smush two words together to form the word I really want. One of the first ones I did was when I decided that [profile] beckyfeld is my pharmacister. :-)

I direct you to your post of December 16th last: "A Poll of Much Randomness." Specifically, I believe the third poll will be of interest to you in your current endeavor.

I'll cop to "snackquisition" and "pornucopia" (though that second, I found out subsequently, is nowhere near unique to my idiolect). "Wifm" was perpetrated upon me at a meeting at work. "Obnoxia" is the noun form of "obnox." :-) I'll add the first two, for sure, though.

The latter is rather close to a terrible Piers Anthony novel. Actually, there are many terrible Piers Anthony novels (Chthon springs to mind, as do many of the Xanth novels), but this one stands out (Pornocopia). IIRC, it is a paean to an excretion of uncircumcised men.

Bleah.

On a cheerier note, maybe there should be a Pohl/Anthony crossover, "Beyond the Blue Adept Horizon"?
