gnomi: (here_comes_treble (shoegal-icons))
[personal profile] gnomi
-- One of [personal profile] gnomi's life rules: I should not see my coworkers' hipbones. Never-never.
-- I'm struck by the fact that I have a number of friends who (a) don't have a television, or (b) don't have a cell phone, or (c) have neither.
-- I am guilty of having broken out into song in other folks' LJs. I apologize in advance if I break out into song in yours unexpectedly.
-- It's in the 50s today; it's supposed to be in the 90s over the weekend. I don't think I have anything to wear for the 50s -- I've never owned a poodle skirt. The 90s are easier -- I still have a number of articles of clothing that I bought while in college.
-- Among the things I'm considering for Shavuot food: cheese blintz casserole thingy, Bill's Swiss veggie medley, lasagna, chocolate cheese pie. I have no clue if those go together. If it's going to be hot, starting with soup is probably a bad idea. Unless I do fruit soup or other cold soup. Will continue to ponder.
-- It's really hard to make an appointment somewhere when, each time one calls, the phone either rings and rings and rings without picking up or the line is busy.
-- Yesterday seemed to be "run into everyone in Coolidge Corner" evening. This happens periodically; I wish there would be a schedule published.
-- Cole Porter has invaded my brain.
-- People reading audiobooks should not do funny voices. It just makes me giggle, and then I lose the plot.
-- How late is too late to invite someone for a Yom Tov meal? Or a Shabbat meal? The latest [personal profile] mabfan and I ever invited anyone, that I can think of (when it wasn't just an in-shul, "Hey, do you have lunch plans? Wanna come home with us?") was when we called [personal profile] arib about 20 minutes before candle lighting one erev Y"T and invited him to second-day lunch.
-- I've been watching "Doctor Who" episodes with the commentary tracks. I love it when the writers crack themselves up at their own lines.

I agree, I never want to see my co-worker's hipbones. Eeek!!!

Cheese blintz casserole thingy = YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do a cucumber cold soup :)

I've done the cold cucumber soup before, and it was a hit; I'll have to definitely ponder.

You know that birds do it.
Bees do it.
Even educated fleas do it.
Let's do it.
Lesbian in loooooove!

I have no TV, and my cell phone is usually turned off and left on the dresser.

:-)

I knew you had no TV; I half expected you to be one of the folks without a cell phone, as well. No particular reason why, though.

Since we have a landline, I almost always turn off my cell phone when I get home from work. People then seem flummoxed when they get my voicemail "after hours."

I refused to get a cell phone for years.
Then when i went on vacation, I found out that I'd need to coordinate with several people, so I got one of those pay-as-you-go. I only use it for when i'm on vacation and need to coordinate getting together with folk. Otherwise, i have a landline, and I don't check messages.

And, see, that makes perfect sense to me. [personal profile] mabfan and I held out for a long time. We got our first cell phone for free (I was working for a telecom publisher, and Ericsson sent free phones with 30 free minutes of usage to everyone on their press release list). But after our 30 free minutes expired, we didn't do anything with the phone. Then one night after work, [personal profile] mabfan had car troubles and it was only due to the kindness of passersby that he was able to get help. That's when he got his phone.

And then I got mine when I moved to a job in Cambridge and we had a few too many missed connections due to transportation woes. And then September 11, 2001 came, and we were happy that we both had phones.

for some reason that has morphed in my head over the last half hour into "even variegated trees do it." i blame the subliminal yarn message that i'm sure flashes on my screen whenever i view gnomi's journal.

Want to borrow my Prom Princess Arwen dress from "Return of the King, Uh Huh"? It was made from an actual 1950s vintage pattern. And it's pink and sparkly!

I have a poodle skirt -- granted, it has the One Ring on it, but. Poodle Skirt.

I've been watching Doctor Who fanvideos and Blake's 7 fanvideos on YouTube. Ah. Joy.

* Please DO break into song in my journal. Especially in the Blog Stoker's DRACULA entries.

* Cole Porter is a most welcome invader.

blintz souflee is delish and I think I'm making that for a meal. You have just inspired me. It just screams Shavuot. And gaspacho. The latest I ever invited soemone for shabbat meal was also about 30 minutes before lighting. My philosophy is that it's never too late to invite anyone.
I am so not looking forward to the heat. You should be able to see a ball of frizz walking towards shuil at a snail's pace around 10:30 on shabbat. Humidity+my hair= disaster!

From: [identity profile] gnomi.livejournal.com
I'm glad I could inspire you! It *does* scream Shavuot.

And I hear you on the humidity factor -- I look like the Medusa when it's humid out, which is one of the things that pleases me about covering my hair all the time. :-)

I hear you on that! Except my sheitel frizzes just like my real hair. Since I don't wear t on the weekends, perhaps I have a chance to look semi-okay :)

i used to have a poodle skirt - my mom made it for me. i was in third grade. :D it might still be in my parents' house somewhere. it was a very cute skirt.

feel free to break into song in my lj.

in the event of hot-weather shavuot, might i suggest a quiche? you can eat them cold. but saute the veggies first. (i recommend onion and mushroom.) also gazpacho, which is good and good for you.

Thank you for the invitation to sing in your LJ. I just might do so, if the mood moves me. I accidentally broke out into song in [personal profile] janedavitt's LJ, which is what made me think about this.

And gazpacho is always good, yes. Yummers. And quiche is also good. ::nods:: I shall have to ponder.

I also invite you to feel free to break into song on my LJ. And I highly encourage the preparation and consumption of gazpacho....

You are more than welcome to break into song in my LJ.

People reading audiobooks should not do funny voices. It just makes me giggle, and then I lose the plot.
Oooh, so you do audiobooks too! On tape, CD, or download on an MP3 player? I kinda like funny voices if it is part of the book. Sometimes characters just have funny voices (or are funny) and the reader helps the listener to get that without the visual clues a books would have.

On the other hand, I've listened to books that I didn't finish because I couldn't stand how the actor did a voice. In one book, the woman reading did a terrible job with the male character voices. To me, her male voices sounded with Munchkins from the Wizard of Oz. Since this was supposed to be a somewhat sexy book, that type of voice really didn't fit with the hunky descriptions of the men talking.

I just might break out into song in your LJ, if the mood strikes. :-)

As for audiobooks, I'm not a usual listener (since I have trouble following the plot if I'm reading on the subway or something and I get distracted), though I do listen to podcasts a lot on my MP3 player. My mom does a lot of audiobooks, however, and she has recommended a number of them.

I'm considering trying them again, as I can sit and knit and listen in a way that I can't as easily sit and knit and read (though I know people who *do* knit and read simultaneously).

Well, we have a television but have never watched network anything on it. It gets used for very occasional DVDs and for DDR. And we have cellphones, but no landline.

Given how often I encounter "run into everyone" days, I wonder how often that sort of thing happens. If I had a schedule, I could be there for it more.

"-- I am guilty of having broken out into song in other folks' LJs. I apologize in advance if I break out into song in yours unexpectedly."

As others have pointed out, you should be apologizing for not breaking out in song *more*.

However, please break out into songs that I *know*. And I expect you to be aware of which songs I know...cause you'll be breaking out into song in my journal :)

"-- I've been watching "Doctor Who" episodes with the commentary tracks. I love it when the writers crack themselves up at their own lines."

I wish their commentaries had closed captioning. Especially Ten whose accent gets completely incomprehensible when he's excited...which on the tapes is often.
