-- You can now go on a moose safari in Maine.

-- [personal profile] mabfan and I went and saw "A Jihad for Love" and then attended the Q&A thereafter with the producer and director. I enjoyed the film, but I'm still processing my thoughts about it.

-- Random "I hadn't made the connection before" moment from yesterday: The
actor who played the "real" Captain Jack Harkness in "Captain Jack Harkness" (Torchwood series 1 episode 12) is the same guy who gets a plug at the end of every Reduced Shakespeare Company podcast.

-- New TV shows with which I have become enamored: "The Middleman" and "In Plain Sight."

-- Returning shows the premiers of which I am anxiously anticipating: "Psych," "Eureka," "Stargate: Atlantis," "Burn Notice."

-- Now that it's summer, and with a vengeance, I've been looking for cooler and cooler (temperature-wise) ways to cover my hair. I've settled, for now, on tichels (head scarves), digging out the collection of scarves I picked up in Israel almost 20 years ago. But now I want to get more scarves. Because I like variety. :-) And [personal profile] mabfan and I have this desire to wear matching tie (his) and scarf (mine) to shul. So I'm now looking for, among other things, a scarf with Superman shields on it.

-- For those for whom this is relevant, tomorrow and Friday are Rosh Chodesh Tammuz.

-- I cannot turn off the editing part of my brain. This was brought into stark relief on Shabbat when the rabbi said that the pit into which Korach's followers fell was created "on the first Friday of creation." I leaned over and said to my friend (whose sister-in-law, to whom I had not yet been introduced, was sitting between us), "Hang on… the first Friday of creation? Wasn't there only one?" Immediately, the s-i-l knew that either (a) I am a language pedant, (b) I'm a bit nuts, or both.

wildlike safaris in Maine and NH have been around for years. I was curious as to why boston.com is only now reporting on them. We tried to go last year when we were in NH but we missed out. You are "guaranteed" to see moose, deer, even bears. Not as exciting as an African safari, although the idea of seeing a moose up close is pretty neat-o in my book.

I'm fond of moose (not as fond as I am of penguins, but pretty darn fond). I'd love to see one up close enough that I could take his picture.

me too! when we drive up to NH and see the Moose Crossing signs, I'm always bummed that we NEVER see them!

Maybe he meant "The first Friday, of Creation"?

Dunno.

And you are both a language pedant and a bit nuts.
In the very best way.

He probably did: "The first Friday, the Friday of Creation," but he elided the second "Friday."

And you are both a language pedant and a bit nuts.

Aw, you say the *sweetest* things. ;-)

yay, Middleman!!!

(I must admit that the pilot is the best episode so far, though)

If all else fails, there should be fabric at fabric stores with Superman motifs. Worst case scenario, buy some pillow cases to cut up -- just make sure they aren't flannel :-)

Yeah, flannel tichels would be a bit odd, especially in the current weather.

I'm totally into "in plain sight." I was watching the lola episode for about the 10th time when Jim wanndered in, sat down, and became enamored too... hah!

Eureka, the closer, saving grace, are some I'm looking forward to.

I love Mary McCormack in "In Plain Sight," and I really didn't like her character in "The West Wing." And I love the chemistry between Mary and Marshall.

I never watched the west wing. I could do without the family side, mom and sis, but that's okay too

She played a recurring character in later seasons, but she felt sort of tacked on to the rest of the cast.

I love the work stuff, and I wonder what they're building up to with all the family stuff.

Also, I'm with you on the language pedantry.

Both [personal profile] mabfan and I really took to "Burn Notice" last summer. We're both fans of Bruce Campbell, too, which doesn't hurt.

As for the language pedantry, it seems to just *happen*. I was well behaved, though, and didn't mention it to the rabbi after services. :-)

i love in plain sight, and am SO looking forward to new burn notices. (partly because i read a casting spoiler that resulted in high levels of squee, and partly because i just really like everyone who's already on the show. and it's fun.) also eureka.

Ooh... squee-inducing cast spoilers? Yay!

ETA: I think I found it. Yes, squee indeed. I can't wait to see the interaction between CastingSpoiler and Michael. Or Fi, for that matter.

ETA2: And now I've found a second casting spoiler that I'm looking forward to seeing... This season's going to be interesting. And good for people playing Canadian Actor Bingo.

That was an awesome post!

I will be very curious to hear your view of "A Jihad for Love". I am still not sure when it is playing in the SF Bay area, but I need to eventually look it up.

Does anyone in your shul wear a sheitel? I'm not even sure if it's a Modern Orthodox minhag to wear them. I know Chabad women tend to wear them, and then another covering for shul (if they go). I talked to my parents and they said the heat and humidity are sure going strong. Thus, I am sure a tichus is the way to go (as opposed to a hat). You should take a trip to Brooklyn, I am sure you will find tichels of all sort there! ;-)

I can't believe how quick time if flying and Rosh Chodesh Tammuz is here. Wow! Before I know it I will be back in Boston (late August).

I can TOTALLY see you doing that in shul. You are nuts, then again, so am I!!!! ;-) That's why we get along famously!

From: [identity profile] gnomi.livejournal.com
A couple of women in our shul wear sheitel regularly (the rebbetzin is really the only one I can think of who always wears one). Everyone else goes with hats or tichels.

According to the site, A Jihad for Love (http://www.ajihadforlove.com/screenings.html) will be in San Francisco in late August. With luck, it won't be the same part of late August that you'll be here in Boston.

I can TOTALLY see you doing that in shul.

Over the past year and a half or so, I have acquired something of a posse (as one of the members of said posse has termed it) in my row in shul. They indulge my weirdnesses, and I theirs.

From: [identity profile] eireangus.livejournal.com
Very interesting! My experience is mostly with Chassidish women and most wear a sheitel always, and then sometimes a tichus or hat over it (at least for shul). I think at home some of them just wear a covering without a sheitel. But, since I am not a woman, I am not sure.

I think I might be able to just make it, as I will be in Massachusetts from August 27th until September 3rd. I am hoping to meet up again with everyone!

You have a little more flexibility with having your own posse in shul, as mine is so small and mostly just men. At least women can hide a bit easier in shul. Hehe! ;-)

We all think alike- the only show you mentioned I *don't* watch is Psyche. Probably because I've never seen it :-)

I'm actually kinda liking the summer season thing. It's a nice change of pace- more casual shows, but fun.

I like having new content over the summer. It's a great trend. Because there are only so many "Law and Order" eps one can watch in a given evening. :-)

As for Psych, we started watching it for Dule Hill, but we found we enjoyed it all around.
