...Vampire Weekend has a new single out, Oxford Comma (link to YouTube video).

This pleases me no end.

Dear folks that write radio ad copy,

That thingy in Web addresses, the "/"? That is a virgule, AKA a slash. It is not, I repeat *not*, a back slash. If someone were to type the Web address with a backslash, they wouldn't get anywhere. To show you the difference, here's a back slash: \. Here, in fact, are multiple: \\\\\\. They should never appear in URLs. Never ever.

And why is it that you can say "www.blahblah.com-slash-purplemonkey" but then you say "backslash-dishwasher"? I mean, if you look at the URL, it's the same punctuation mark. Trust me.

In the name of punctuation clarity and proper punctuation identity,

And now, the sign that prompted this morning's thought question:

Apostrophe Abuse for Brookline!

The irony of it all is that one of the main foci of the funding hoped for under this question (a proposed override of Proposition 2 1/2) is earmarked for programs for Brookline public schools.

Is it wrong of me to vote against someone/something because there's an extraneous apostrophe in the signs supporting it?

(This question brought to you on account of today's town election in Brookline.)

This time, on the current comma crisis.

(I've always had a theory about commas -- that there's a comma continuum and for each comma I remove from one author's prose, I add one to another author's prose. Perhaps this is a glitch in that system.)

F-Minus agrees!

(OK, maybe not)

(Call the Comma Police!)

Because there are differences among:

-- stinky-fish-eating coworker
-- stinky fish-eating coworker
-- stinky fish eating coworker

If a stinky fish were eating my coworker, I'd be concerned. The other two are just annoyances.

YALP!
