In Which
gnomi is a Musical Troublemaker
May. 6th, 2008 01:40 pmSo
mabfan and I met for lunch downtown (as is our usual pattern for Tuesday), and as we're walking back to the T along Tremont St., we pass a tour group being led by a woman in Colonial garb. Just as we pass, she starts leading them in song:
"My country, 'tis of thee/Sweet land of liberty/Of thee I sing."
As we pass, I sing -- not softly, but not loudly, either, and
mabfan joins in -- "Send her victorious/Happy and glorious/Long to reign o'er us/God save the Queen."
We then sang the next stanza ("Oh, Lord our God arise/Scatter her enemies/And make them fall./Confound their politics/Frustrate their knavish tricks/On thee our hopes we fix/God save us all") as we headed across Park St. to the T.

The irony of it all is that one of the main foci of the funding hoped for under this question (a proposed override of Proposition 2 1/2) is earmarked for programs for Brookline public schools.
