As reported in this morning's Boston Globe, Royal Caribbean has purchased advertising space inside the tunnel between the Harvard and Central stops on the Red Line. And I experienced this new advertising this morning. My opinion? Meh. Honestly, if I hadn't read the article on the bus on the way to the T, I wouldn't have known to be looking for it, and I likely would've been too engrossed in my book/paper/nap to notice the ad flashing by.

Also, as one of my commuting buddies pointed out, isn't tunnel access restricted to T employees? I (and she) expressed hope that our tax dollars weren't paying for the time the T employees were installing the Royal Caribbean ad.

They have these in the PATH tunnel between 14th and 23rd Streets. Cute, but...yeah, who cares?

It was highly likely that T employees put up the ad, considering that the T got $400,000 for it.

So it wasn't necessarily your tax dollars at work, but it certainly was your state employees at work.

Hmm. I'm weirdly drawn to the idea. More drawn to the idea of a cruise I wouldn't have to catch a plane to go on, but it's still not likely that I could go, as I have two trips to make next year, neither one of which is, alas, to Bermuda.

are they thinking they'll get a captive audience when the train gets stuck or backed up, and all the communters can actually see the ads without just whizzing by them? seems like a waste of money on the part of royal caribbean.

Actually, the ads are designed so that they can only be seen by the people wizzing by.

Anyone looking straight at the ads will only see a wierd, blurry image.

Ironically enough, I think I was reading about those ads as I was going past Harvard... ;)

The one in your userpic? Is he the guy who played Knox Overstreet in Dead Poets Society?

(sorry for the completely irrelevant question)

I am now, having read this thread (and not the newspaper) tempted to go cruise back and forth on the red line a few times, just for fun.

That is Josh Charles, seen in the userpic in his role as Dan Rydell in "Sports Night." He is, indeed, the same guy who played Knox Overstreet in Dead Poets Society.

I was pleased that the ad was going to be somewhere I go frequently - Harvard to Kendall is one half of my daily commute in each direction. Otherwise, I might've felt compelled to ride just to see the ad.

I saw the ad, though from an angle since I was in the seat next to the door with my back to the wall it was on. I was looking out the door window up toward it.

I have to admit, it was kind of fun. Really, most mornings I will not even pay attentions because I will be reading. But I get a kick out of those little flippy books.

If you have ever been to the new Denver Airport, they have these art pieces that are like that.

Must be a lot of 18 to 35 year olds ride that train.

actually, i was totally blown away
by what i think is not only a brilliant advertising scheme
but a great space to do lots of stuff.
makes me want to write an art proposal...almost.
and besides...i was sort of hoping that all the extrra cash this will hopefully generate
could go towards all night trains....
