-- It's *cold* -- the high today is supposed to be about 20-25 F, with a wind chill of -10 or so. It's a right balmy 15 at the moment, according to my weather bug. And of course it's supposed to be in the 50s later in the week and we're supposed to get wet and sloppy weather on Friday. Ah, New England. :-)

-- An observation from yesterday: We have a heck of a lot of books.

-- On Thursday, on the way to mandatory fun our office's holiday party, I discovered that a coworker I've known for almost nine years is a major comic book fan. This pleases me.

-- I'm working on knitting down my stash, having now filled five decent-sized bins with yarn (I finally organized a whole bunch of previously unorganized yarn). I found a sweater's worth of yarn (all the same dyelot, even) I hadn't realized I had, so now I have to figure out what pattern I want to use.

-- Does anyone know the origin of the "five things make a post" idea? It's widespread, but I haven't figured out where it started.

This Saturday, 4 October, is the 51st anniversary of the launch of Sputnik. [personal profile] mabfan and I are going to launch at the home of friends of ours, and I offered to bring dessert. And I was challenged, if possible, to bring a dessert that fits the theme of Sputnik or satellites. So...

Suggest to me (relatively straightforward, as I need to make it tonight) a dessert that somehow ties into satellites in general or Sputnik specifically.

(If I fail to come up with anything themed, they're getting brownies.)

[personal profile] mabfan and I are coming down to New York City for a couple days (18-21 September). Our time is a combination of already booked and totally unstructured, and you (yes, you!) can help us figure out what to do. Here's what we know already:

-- Thursday: Arriving mid-morning, dropping luggage, lunch with a friend in midtown, show in the evening.

-- Friday: [livejournal.com profile] mabfan has a 12:00 PM appointment to tape "Hour of the Wolf" for WBAI; I will be footloose and fancy free for two hours.

-- Shabbat: With friends [personal profile] chaos_wrangler and G., with bonus visiting with [personal profile] sdelmonte and [personal profile] batyatoon

-- Sunday: 4:00 PM-ish train back to Boston

What we don't know:

-- What to do Thursday afternoon between lunch and dinner (though there might be a trip to the New-York Historical Society)

-- What I should do with myself from noon until 2 on Friday while [personal profile] mabfan is doing his interview

-- What we're doing after [personal profile] mabfan's interview (and before Shabbat), and whether anyone wants to join us for whatever that may be

-- Where we might meet folks for lunch on Sunday (only parameters are kosher, somewhere not horribly far from Penn Station)

-- Which of you lovely folks are joining us for lunch on Sunday

[profile] lcmlc and Abba are going to a Bat Mitzvah on Monday for a girl they don't know all that well (she's the granddaughter of two of lc/lc's dear friends). And [profile] lcmlc is unsure of what to get as a gift. So... I appeal to you, the all-knowing friends list. What is a good gift for a girl of whom all I know is the following:

-- She's 12 years old
-- She attends a pluralistic Jewish day school

So, yeah. What does one get for such a child? Any thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

So, if you were trying to hook someone on steampunk, what books would you recommend?

A question mostly for those using emoticons in Hebrew correspondence: Do they go R-to-L like the rest of the Hebrew sentence (thus "backwards" from a Roman alphabet perspective), or do they go L-to-R?

My instinct is to say that they'd go R-to-L like the rest of the sentence (but not like numbers, which go L-to-R), but that's purely speculation on my part. If someone has more concrete information, it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm looking to get a microphone that is compatible with my Mac. I'm thinking of this one, of which I've heard good things, but I don't want to settle for it just because it's inexpensive. Does anyone know anything about the Logitech mic? Or can anyone recommend a different one that's good and, say, $100 or under?

Because [personal profile] ayoub made me think about it, and because I've always had a not-so-secret desire to be a lexicographer, I pose the following question:

If there were to be a dictionary of [personal profile] gnomi-isms, what words would it contain?

Off the top of my head, I can think of:

-- Splorp (that which inspired this line of thought)
-- Narf
-- Thingy
-- Obnox
-- Enpenguinate

Additional [personal profile] gnomi-isms:
-- Horfles (suggested by [personal profile] mabfan)
-- Procrastisurfing (suggested by [personal profile] tsuki_no_bara)
-- Snackquisition (suggested by [profile] beths_stanley)
-- Pornucopia (suggested by [profile] beths_stanley)

But then I get stuck. I know there are many words in my idiolect that are specifically [personal profile] gnomi-isms, but I have no idea what they are. So I bring it to you. What should go in the Dictionary of [personal profile] gnomi-isms?

Last year, I asked people for suggestions of what I should photograph. I'm in the mood to do it again. So... I am now taking requests for random photos. As I take 'em, I'll post 'em.

First name is Trevor (I figured that one out a long time ago, again by polling y'all). But now he needs a last name. Mid-30s, all-American gymnast-type now working as a coach at [random university]. Any and all suggestions appreciated.

[personal profile] mabfan and I are looking to buy a scanner. We'd love to get one that also can be a fax machine. But we don't know what are the best ones, so we figured we'd ask here. Our current technological parameters are:

-- Needs to connect to a Mac iBook G4 running Tiger (OS 10.4)
-- Needs to be able to produce good-quality digital renditions from color and black-and-white photographs

So? Suggestions?

Now, I know one is not supposed to go psak shopping (that is, one should not ask the same question of multiple rabbis until one gets the answer one likes). However, is there a statute of limitations (as it were) on asking a question and not receiving an answer at all before you can pose it to a second rabbi? In other words, if I sent a question with some time sensitivity to Rabbi A, how long do I have to wait for an answer before I can feel comfortable sending the question to Rabbi B?

(not a current concern; I'm just wondering)

So, it's been in the high-80s/low-90s all day, and I've got guests coming for Shabbat dinner. Do I put up the hot water for after-dinner tea?

A sealed (never opened) bottle of store-bought fresh-squeezed orange juice that has been sitting in the fridge for a couple of months... still drinkable? Anyone know?

Inspired by a typo in last week's similarly themed post and a subsequent comment by [profile] 530nm330hz, a memelet:

Help me plan my Shabbat menu in the comments. Then post your Shabbat menu outline in your own blog....

It looks like I'm making both dinner and lunch this Shabbat, with one confirmed guest for both meals and a couple of possible others. The basic plot meal outline is as follows:

-- Challah and grape juice (maybe offer remains of last week's wine, as well)

-- Starter

-- Main dish (meat)

-- Side (vegetable)

-- Side (starch)

-- Dessert

I'm leaning toward beef for one meal and chicken for the other, but I'm flexible. I have lots of sides recipes that are good either cold or hot. I haven't made a Yerushalmi kugel in a good long while, so maybe I'll make one of those.

Side note: similarly themed post? similarly-themed post? [profile] beths_stanley, any hyphen-related insights? ;-)

Suggestions, anyone?

A friend of [profile] lcmlc has a wedding to go to and needs a dress that is tzniusdik (conforming to Jewish modesty standards) as well as fancy. What do I know? I make my own for stuff like that. So I turn to y'all... where (in the Boston area or national chains) would you suggest she shop?

Thanks!
gnomi: (frum_chick)
...for me, at least, but could anyone out there hook a frum chick up with some otherwise-kosher-friendly recipes for things to do with cooked crabmeat, cooked lobster, or cooked shrimp?

Thanks!

As a follow-up to yesterday's discussion, I began to wonder what folks' grammar error pet peeves are. Here are some of mine:

-- Its/it's

-- Fewer/less

-- That/which

-- Their/they're/there

-- Your/you're

I'd love to hear other folks', if you all (or y'all) are in a mood to share.

OK, so. It's finally seeming like spring may be here for a bit. So, I've got the itch to be out and about. And I'm also in the mood to take pictures, but I don't know of what. So... give me suggestions! What, if anything, in the Nomi-verse do you want to see photos of?

(It occurs to me that I have no spring-y icons. The Sox is as close as I appear to get.)
gnomi: (knit_before_zoidberg!)
So, I have acquired from [personal profile] magid a cone of what is speculated to be a wool-mohair blend, fingering- or sport-weight (it knits up at 7 stitches per inch on US 2s) yarn. There's estimated to be about 1,000 yards (if not more) on the cone. Now, I could knit multiple pairs of gloves or multiple pairs of socks, but I'm not sure. So, I appeal to the knitters (and others) reading this. What should I knit out of it? Its color is close to the Beige Meliert here.

Links to free online patterns always accepted, but general categories are good, too. :-)
